What Is An Ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist, an Eye M.D., is a medical doctor who has completed additional specialized training in all aspects of eye care; medical, surgical, and optical. They have completed 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 1 year of internship, and at least 3 years of residency in a hospital receiving intensive advanced training in the diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders.

How frequently Should I see an Eye Physician?

  • Newborn-Preteen: Pediatrition, Family Physician. Preferably an Eye Physician.
  • 20-39 years of age: At least once. How ever, due to a greater risk of glaucoma, African Americans should be seen every 3 to 5 years.
  • 40-64 years of age: You should be seen every 2 to 4 years.
  • 65 years of age and older: You should be seen every 1 to 2 years.

When Should I see an Eye Physician?

  • Decreased vision, even temporarily.
  • Flashes of light.
  • Strange objects (floating strings or specks in your vision).
  • A curtain or veil blocking vision.
  • Haloes (colored circles around lights).
  • Pain in or around the eye.
  • Redness or irrataion in or around the eye.
  • Excessive eye discharge or tearing.
  • Bluging or one or both eyes.
  • Crossed eyes.
  • Double vision.
  • Diabetes.
  • Family history of eye issues.
